If the Chinese have IT, get it. The Indian government seems to be taking a leaf out of China 's operating system, and is planning a countrywide drive to promote the open source operating system, Linux, as the 'platform of choice' instead of 'proprietary' solutions.
The Department of Information Technology has already devised a strategy to introduce Linux and open source software as a de-facto standard in academic institutions, especially in engineering colleges through course work that encourages use of such systems.

Linux will win a greater role in government by offering to act as result of a federally certified version. The Cyberspace Policy Institute, established a decade ago at George Washington University, plans to certify Linux under the Common Criteria, a standard grading of technology required by the United States and other countries before products can be sold into sensitive government applications. The initiative would lead to a single, standard version of Linux acceptable to the high security standards of the government, (and commerce of course), and hence make it easier for Linux companies to compete against Microsoft and other large software makers.
